I think I had the same reaction as many of our readers when the very first screens of Age of Empires Online drifted into the fanged, slathering maw of the internet. It was a kneejerk reaction --Age of Empires wasn't meant to be bright and colorful! It was meant to look realistic, and play like Deadliest Warrior on a societal scale!
Despite being tossed between developers, spending a few moments with Age of Empires Online shows the great care and attention to detail that went into its creation. Especially so if you look at the way units animate. Slingers have numerous attack animations, some of which are really intricate. Even lowly farmers have several really clever raking animations. The poly-count may be low, but the love level is off the charts, and all ties in well with the cartoony art direction.
